Womanist ethics analyzes the structures of oppression of black women by viewing the historical, social, and cultural context. It points to the questions of race, gender, and class of black women to comprehend their overall experience and context. Black women writers such as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Toni Cade Bambara record the lives of black women and the black community through their literature. Therefore, many womanist scholars regard African American literature as crucial for analyzing black women regarding race, gender, and class.
This article examines Toni Morrison and three black woman characters in her novels, The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula (1973), and Beloved (1987). It will analyze Morrison regarding phenomenology, controlling images, and womanist ethics. In addition, it will examine the black women characters through womanist ethics and explore the themes of suffering and healing of black women. By focusing on the themes of suffering and healing of black women and the black community in the work of black women writers, we can learn racism, sexism, and classism through the character’s suffering, and we can explore how marginalized individuals overcome their suffering by recovering self-love, identity, and hope in community and their culture.
