The purpose of this study was to analyze how much self-regulated learning influenced language learners’ efforts and English achievement. The ability of self-regulated learning had an impact on student’s efforts, but not directly on English achievement, as revealed by the path analysis. However, the effect of self-regulated learning on English achievement was transmitted through the variable of effort. In other words, self-regulated learning influenced the mediator variable – effort – which, in turn, had a direct effect on English achievement. Finally, there was a total effect between self-regulated learning and English achievement. We also explored how language learners used their self-regulated learning strategy through the structured diary required as a task for a semester. The profile of learners in the upper group was distinctive from that of the lower group in English achievement. The upper-level groups tended to have more specific goals than the lower-level groups and experienced successful cyclical processes of self-regulation learning strategy. Furthermore, good-grade learners tended to not only use a variety of self-regulation learning strategies but also experience positive goal achievement more frequently.
