Purpose This study was to find out how the difference in the application of wrist immobilization splints (WIS), which affect wrist stability as well as of the hand intrinsic muscles facilitation program (HIMFP) in stroke patients, has an effect on tension of hand intrinsic muscle, wrist extensor activity, and hand motor function. Methods After randomly classifying two groups, WIS with HIMFP performed in the experimental group (EG), and HIMFP was performed without WIS in the control group (CG). As tests, MyotonPRO was used for hand intrinsic muscle tension, EMG was used for wrist extensor activity, and it used for hand motor function as MFT and FMA. As for the intervention, HIMFP was applied for 30 minutes per time, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks in both groups, and only the EG was added to wear WIS for more than 90 minutes a day, 7 times a week for 4 weeks. Results In two groups, EG showed significant differences in intrinsic muscle tension, wrist extensor activity, and hand function. In CG, there were significant differences in intrinsic muscle tension and hand function. Between two groups after the intervention, there was a significant difference in wrist extensor activity and hand function. Conclusions HIMFP can be helpful in restoring hand function in stroke patients. In addition, it is considered that WIS, which is used to improve wrist stability, can be of greater help in restoring hand function.
