Purpose: In South Korea, living donor liver transplantations (LDLT) involving family members account for over 98% of all cases, with the most common instances occurring between parents and their children. This study aimed to explore the crisis-adaptation experiences among families involved in blood-related LDLT. Methods: A multiple case study method was applied in this study. A “case” was defined as a family in which a blood-related parent (recipient) and adult child (donor) were currently hospitalized following LDLT. Data were collected between October 5 and November 2, 2022, using a triangulation method that included both qualitative interviews and a survey. Six cases were included. Data were collected using the case study methodology suggested by Yin(2013) to explore crisis adaptation patterns among blood-related LDLT families. Results: Two patterns of crisis adaptation experiences in blood-related LDLT families were identified: “emotionally focused-supportive interaction” and “functionally focused-obsessive problem-solving.” Conclusion: The LDLT experience is a family crisis that can alter family dynamics. This study can serve as a reference for developing services that offer family-centered intervention to LDLT families.
