This paper analyzed the collexemes of the synonymous constructions ‘Turan+VP’, ‘Huran+VP’, ‘Mengran+VP’, and ‘Zhouran+VP’ which mean ‘suddenly VP’, and organized the differences through the ‘collostructional analysis approach’. It was shown that quantifying the relationship between collexemes that appear in specific grammatical positions (slots) of a construction and the construction can be more effective than raw frequency in identifying which words have a strong association with a given construction and revealing differences.
As a result of the analysis, the semantic properties of each construction and its associated lexical class are as follows.
‘Turan+VP’ is related to the occurrence and appearance of physical accidents, events that disappear or stop, and the occurrence of negative events of animate experiencer such as death, illness, and accidents. Most of them are negative events that cause ‘sadness’ or ‘psychological shock’ and are strongly associated with abstract verbs that mean damage from dangerous events or negative events.
‘Huran+VP’ strongly prefers mostly cognitive perception verbs and recognition verbs, various emotional verbs, facial expression verbs, and communication verbs such as speaking, asking questions, or understanding.
‘Mengran+VP’ strongly prefers experiencer"s cognitive awakening verbs such as ‘enlightenment’ and action verbs that refer to specific body movements and negative results of physical actions.
‘Zhouran+VP’ strongly prefers classes of verbs that express ‘fall’, ‘increase’, ‘rise’, ‘decrease’, ‘intensification’ of quantity, value, speed, temperature, etc., and verbs related to auditory stimulation and classes that express changes in physical properties, such as contraction and condensation.
Lastly, this paper was able to visualize the relationship between constructions and their collexemes and empirically confirm the relative close relationship within the synonymous constructions through exploratory statistical analysis, correspondence analysis and hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis.
