In the late Joseon Dynasty, some lineages established a temporary office called “bocheong(譜廳)” to compile genealogy. In genealogy compilation offices, executives were appointed to share the work, and collective cooperation among lineage members could be activated. The Pyeonggang(平康) Chae(蔡) Lineage compiled the genealogy books six times from the late 17th century to the early 20th century. The first genealogy book, Sinchukbo(辛丑譜) was edited and published by pioneering individuals in the absence of the genealogy compilation organization such as bocheong. As a result, early genealogy books were missing a lot of genealogical records, and there were great difficulties in completing the publication.
The genealogy compilation office was established in the mid-18th century when the second genealogy book, Mujinbo(戊辰譜) was edited. The office was located in a Buddhist temple in Heungdeok(興德), Jeolla province for the compilation of second genealogy book. When editing the third book, Imjabo(壬子譜), and the fourth book, Eulhaebo(乙亥譜), offices were set up in Seoul, perhaps because influential officials of the central government led the compilation of the genealogy. The offices for compilation of the fifth genealogy book, Musulbo(戊戌譜), and the sixth genealogy book, Sinyubo(辛酉譜) were moved to Impi(臨陂), Jeolla Province, where the ancestral site was located. The location of the office came and went between the central and local regions, but no matter where the office was located, lineage members living in Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces were widely involved.
The Pyeonggang Chae lineage’s genealogy compilation offices continuously tried to contact relatives of each branch to form a human network across the country, and appointed executives in charge of each branch or region to collect documents necessary to participate in the genealogy and raise publication costs. The offices also established genealogy editing regulations and oversaw the overall publication of genealogy books, while adopting a low-cost wooden type printing suitable for genealogy printing, and making efforts to distribute published genealogy books to places where they were needed.
