Objective: This retrospective study aimed to analyze the characteristics of Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) patients treated under general anesthesia (GA) and Non-Pharmacological Behavioral Guidance (NPBG) and to compare the prognosis of treatment according to each behavioral guidance method. Material and Methods: This study reviewed the electronic medical records of patients with SHCN from March 2018 to October 2021. Demographic factors (sex, age, region of residence, ASA class, and disability type), treatment and prognosis (follow-up period, treatment outcome) were analyzed in the GA group and the NPBG group. Results: After analyzing 56 patients in GA group and 52 patients in NPBG group, the mean age of GA group was 12.2 years and 7.6 years in NPBG group, with significant difference (p <0.0001). In disability types, the rate of intellectual disability and brain lesion disorder showed significant difference between the GA and NPBG groups (p =0.038). The rates of stainless steel crown restorations, pulp treatments of permanent teeth, and extractions of primary and permanent teeth showed significant difference between the groups, with more in GA group (p <0.05). There was no significant difference in the rate of long-term follow-ups for more than 36 months after treatment (p >0.05), and in treatment outcomes in the period before and after 24 months (p >0.05) between two groups. Conclusion: In the treatment of SHCH patients with poor dental cooperation and poor oral health, recognizing the clinical characteristics of patients would help to make decision on appropriate behavioral guidance methods and provide high-quality dental care.
