Banana Yoshimoto"s Kitchen (1988) and Han Kang"s The Vegetarian (2007) are novels that depict the lives of young women in the societies of Japan and Korea, with food a central theme evident in their titles. In Kitchen, the protagonist Mikage leads a life centered around cooking and sharing meals with others. Conversely, in The Vegetarian, Yeong-hye adopts a vegetarian lifestyle after a dream, ultimately rejecting food and moving toward death. While these two works present contrasting outcomes, they share numerous commonalities such as food as a symbolic motif, resistance against patriarchal structures, and an affirmation of motherhood.
A comparison of these works shows that, Kitchen portrays resistance against traditional gender roles within the familial system through characters like Mikage and Eriko. In particular, Eriko, having undergone a gender transition, raises her son as a single mother. Her embrace of life as a woman and the joys of motherhood, deeply influence Mikage. Contrariwise, in The Vegetarian, Yeong-hye rejects the consumption of meat after dreaming of consuming raw meat while bleeding. Her declaration of vegetarianism exposes the underlying male dominance within the family, yet she strives to become akin to a symbol of nature, a tree, while refusing food.
