In recent years, sustainable development has been attracting growing attention across the world. All industries are encouraged to find innovative ways to minimize adverse impacts on the environment. These trends are also rapidly manifesting in the furniture design sector. In the past, furniture designers tended to ignore the environment and sustainability for the sake of completing projects faster at lower costs. However, the growing interest in environmental issues has resulted in trends toward more eco-friendly and sustainable interior designs.
As such, the purpose of this study is to study the design principles of furniture products using sustainable materials and their applications, thereby exploring methods that combine environmental protection, resource-saving, and eco-friendly concepts in the design process. The case analysis provided by this study is aimed at directing designers’ attention to ecological sustainability and contributing to ensuring more eco-friendly and sustainable development of the furniture design industry.
The analysis in this study focuses on the environmental, social, and economic aspects of the designs. It examines the classification of sustainable materials and defines three categories (recycled materials, natural materials, and technological materials) and looks into cases of furniture designs using the sustainable materials.
As for the research method, this study reviews books, journal articles, and websites in Korea and other countries for a theoretical examination of the definition and concept of sustainable designs as well as sustainable materials and analyzes the relevant cases to identify the sustainable characteristics of the materials.
Thus, this study provides case analysis and proposals regarding the use of sustainable materials in furniture designs, and its findings can be summarized as follows. First, in the environmental aspect, recycled materials allow for minimizing resource consumption while natural materials protect the ecosystem and technological materials contribute to realizing the potential of the materials and addressing the relevant issues by innovating the manufacturing processes and controlling the use of materials. Second, in the social aspect, recycled materials contribute to social and economic development and technological advancement, and natural materials have the potential of satisfying the needs of all parties involved. Technological materials can be used in furniture used in public spaces, and ensure equality and fairness through the impact of new technologies on the wider society. Third, in the economic aspect, recycled materials offer high economic values despite their low prices, and natural materials help companies attract customers by increasing their brand awareness. In addition, technological materials help companies develop products that offer sustainable long-term yields on investments.
This study seeks to provide reference materials and guidelines for furniture designs in the future and provide case studies aimed at deeply understanding the design principles and methods for sustainable materials, thereby helping designers integrate the concept of ecological designs in their projects in a more effective manner, and promote sustainable developments that offer greater benefits to the society, environment, and economy. This reflects the wider trends in the design sector toward sustainable solutions to satisfy the needs of future generations.

최근 몇 년 동안, 전 세계적으로 지속가능한 개발에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 모든 산업은 환경에 대한 부정적인 영향을 최소화하기 위해 혁신적인 방법을 찾도록 장려되고 있으며, 이러한 흐름은 가구디자인 분야에서도 빠르게 발전하고 있다. 과거에는 가구디자인이 프로젝트를 빠르고 저렴한 비용으로 완료하기 위해 환경과 지속가능성을 무시하는 경향이 있었다. 그러나 최근에는 환경 이슈에 대한 관심이 높아지면서, 실내 디자인은 보다 친환경적이고 지속가능한 방향으로 진화하고 있다.
그러므로 본 연구 목적은 지속가능한 재료를 활용한 가구 제품의 디자인 원칙과 응용에 대한 심층 연구를 통해 장식 창작 과정에서 환경 보호, 자원 절약, 및 생태 친화적인 개념을 통합하는 방법을 모색하는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 사례분석을 통해 디자이너가 생태적 지속가능성에 대한 관심을 더욱 끌 수 있도록 유도하여 가구디자인 산업을 보다 친환경적이고 지속가능한 방향으로 발전시키는 데 도움을 주고자 하였다.
본 연구범위는 지속가능한 환경성, 사회성, 경제성을 중심으로 고찰 분석 하였다. 지속가능한 재료의 분류를 정리하고, 재활용 재료, 천연 지속가능 재료, 과학기술 재료의 3가지 범주를 고려하여, 지속가능한 재료를 활용한 가구디자인 사례를 분석하였다.
연구방법은 국내외 서적, 논문, 웹페이지 등을 통해 지속가능한 디자인의 정의, 개념, 지속가능한 재료에 대한 이론적 고찰을 연구하였으며, 사례 분석을 통해 재료의 지속가능한 특성을 연구하였다.
지속가능한 특성에 의한 가구디자인 재료에 대한 활용사례 및 방안제시는 다음과 같은 결론을 도출시켰다. 첫째, 환경성측면은 재활용 재료가 자원 소모를 최소화할 수 있고, 천연 재료는 생태계를 보호하며, 과학기술 재료는 제조 공정에 혁신과 재료 제어를 통한 지속가능한 재료의 잠재력을 발굴하고 문제점을 해결할 수 있도록 도움을 준다. 둘째, 사회성측면은 재활용 재료가 사회 경제 발전과 기술 수준 향상에 기여하며, 천연 지속가능 재료는 모두의 요구를 충족시킬 수 있다. 과학기술 재료는 공공 공간 가구를 제조하고 새로운 기술이 사회에 미치는 영향을 통해 평등과 공정을 보장한다. 셋째, 경제성측면은 재활용 재료가 저렴하고 경제적 가치가 높으며, 천연 지속가능재료는 상표 인지도 형성에 도움을 주어 고객을 유치하는 데 기여한다. 과학기술 재료는 제품이 지속가능한 장기 투자 수익을 가질 수 있도록 제안하였다.
따라서 본 연구는 미래의 가구디자인에 대한 참고자료와 지침을 제공할 수 있으며, 사례분석을 통해 지속가능한 소재의 설계 원칙과 방법을 깊이 이해함으로써 디자이너가 프로젝트에 생태 설계 개념을 효과적으로 통합하고 지속가능한 개발을 촉진하여 사회, 환경 및 경제에 더 많은 이점을 제공할 수 있도록 도움을 주고자 하였다. 이는 디자인 분야에서 미래 세대의 요구를 충족시키기 위한 지속가능한 솔루션을 찾는 광범위한 추세를 반영하고 있다.
