In this study, we investigated the meaning of the response expression ‘kulekey’ in Korean. The characteristics we identified for ‘kulekey’ can be summarized as follows: Firstly, the usages of ‘kulekey’ are differentiated based on the component of mirativity in their meaning. Secondly, ‘kulekey’ presupposes a certain level of reasoning process by the respondent regarding the content of empathy. Thirdly, expressions of empathy using ‘kulekey’ incorporate emotions of questioning, doubt, or incomprehensibility. Based on these observations, we compared ‘kulekey’ with expressions such as ‘kulssey’, ‘kulenikka’, ‘hakinun’, and the Japanese word ‘tashikani’. ‘kulssey’, as an expression of agreement and empathy, is very similar to ‘kulekey’, but it is characterized by being used only in non-mirative contexts. ‘kulenikka’, as an expression of agreement and empathy, is used in non-mirative contexts, expresses a wide range of emotions including questioning, and has the feature of indicating a higher cognitive position of the respondent compared to ‘kulekey’. While ‘hakinun’ is not an expression of response, it shares similarities with one of the usages of ‘kulekey’ related to deferred realization. The detailed difference lies in the fact that ‘hakinun’ contains the meaning of acknowledgment, whereas ‘kulekey’ contains the meaning of awareness. The Japanese word "tashikani" has various uses, and among them, the holophrase usage shares many commonalities with the mirative ‘kulekey’.
