This study examined the discriminability of different perceptual assimilation types in Korean listeners’ perception of English stop-fricative contrasts in light of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) and the assimilation overlap account. Korean listeners were tested in assimilation and discrimination tasks. The assimilation results identified three different assimilation types, two-category (TC), uncategorized-categorized (UC), and category-goodness (CG). The discrimination results showed that Korean listeners were significantly more accurate at discriminating two non-native consonants for the TC and UC contrasts than for the CG contrast, consistent with the PAM. In general, the findings suggest that the perceptual patterns of non-native consonant contrasts reflect listeners’ native phonological system and support the PAM in which discriminability of non-native contrasts can be explained by their assimilation types. The findings were also interpreted in relation to overlap scores.
