This study seeks to critically examine Mohsin Hamid’s The Last White Man in its representation of a world where racial boundaries dissolve. At its core, the novel underscores the idea that race is a product of imagination and that racial ideologies are illusions crafted by societal constructs. Through the protagonist, Anders, originally white, and other characters, the narrative delves into the complexities of evolving racial identities, emphasizing the prejudices that arise as racial distinctions fade. Within this literary world, Hamid brings forth the chaos that emerges when all races converge into one, challenging the deep-rooted racial ideologies and prejudices. This theme not only highlights the transient nature of racial distinctions but also sheds light on the powerful ideological illusions of race. Through the experiences and transformations of characters, the narrative captures the introspection and self-realizations based on racial biases, propelling them into new realms of identity and empathy. Hamid does not merely present an idealized world devoid of racial discrimination. Instead, the novel showcases the tumultuous journey towards such an aspiration. He employs the lens of literary imagination to not only narrate a world where racial differences blur but to illustrate the profound endeavors necessary to break away from long-standing racial beliefs. This unique narrative approach serves as a testament to the potential of literature: it can reshape our understanding of reality, propose new perspectives, and question established societal norms. In essence, Hamid’s work elevates the power of literary imagination, demonstrating its transformative capability to challenge and redefine racial perceptions.
