Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was born in Korea, studied aesthetics at the University of Tokyo, and then went to Germany to further his education. It was there that he began his artistic career in earnest. Later, he moved to the United States, where he continued to expand the boundaries of art through his intermedia work, utilizing various media such as TV, electronic music, and video art. Although Paik is recognized as one of the most widely known Korean artists globally, defining his art precisely is challenging.
This paper examines how research on Nam June Paik has developed in Korea since the 1980s. Research on Paik began domestically following his retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1982, initially led by researchers who had studied in North America and Western Europe. The 1992 retrospective at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea sparked an explosive increase in domestic research output. Early studies tended to reproduce fixed perspectives, but over time, attempts to highlight various aspects of Paik’s work began to emerge. The establishment of the Nam June Paik Art Center led to regular academic events and publications, driving growth in the research field.
Thus, research on Nam June Paik has evolved from simply reproducing existing views to exploring his multifaceted artistic nature. Various academic approaches have been attempted to capture Paik’s avant-garde and interdisciplinary art world, and these efforts continue to this day.
