This paper examines how the medical care and culture of childbirth are embodied in two TV dramas. “Obstetrics and Gynecology” promoted awareness expansion by introducing childbirth as well as gynecological diseases and highlighted the social role of obstetrics and gynecology. The portrayal of a mother who must choose between her own life or that of her child or accept an inevitable abortion due to a fetal malformation has shown that pregnancy and childbirth are by no means easy. Additionally, by depicting medical personnel in the patients’ position in medical dramas, they gained an identity as a “medical person-patient,” emphasizing the appearance of being reborn as a true therapist. “Postpartum Care Center” reconstructs the issue of childbirth in hospitals from the mother s standpoint and overcomes the limitations described by medical professionals. Finally, it strives for motherhood through the appearance of mothers suffering from the dilemma between womanhood and motherhood in the early days of childcare and it emphasizes the necessity of collaborative parenting within couples. The two dramas attempted to create an opportunity for the public to discover the realm of “birth” and transform their perceptions. Specifically, it was thought to be a narrative that conveys sympathy and comfort to women who have experienced childbirth because they understood the pain of the mother in this process and hoped that she would become the subject of childbirth.
