Based on the notion that each culture and language has rhetorical structures unique to it, contrastive rhetoric(CR) has provided a theoretical lens through which to understand L2 reading difficulties. One of the major research findings was that text structure interacts with the reader''s formal schemata to affect reading comprehension and recall. In a small experiment, this study explored whether this finding may apply to the typical Korean rhetorical structure. Results of the study largely confirmed the findings of the previous studies by demonstrating that English L1 participants had greater difficulties recalling and retaining the content of a news editorial written in a Korean traditional ki-sung-chon-kyul rhetorical pattern, compared to Korean L1 participants. This paper concludes by discussing the pedagogical implications of the results for Korean as a foreign language learners that includes how to support advanced learners in familiarizing themselves with the cross-cultural differences in rhetorical structures
