Analysis of Research Trends in Korean ESG Academic Papers: A Comparison Before and After 2021

Today, ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) has emerged as a key factor for achieving sustainable development and long-term corporate performance in the global industrial sector. Companies are focusing on meeting ESG standards and enhancing transparency, and since the announcement of the K-ESG guidelines by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in December 2021, research related to ESG has surged. To examine domestic ESG research trends, we conducted a comparative analysis of 1,576 ESG-related papers published from 2013 to 2024, using text mining techniques to compare studies before and after 2021. The analysis revealed that research from 2013 to 2021 primarily focused on topics such as "financial performance," "financial management," and "economic policy," while studies from 2022 to 2024 highlighted themes like "digital education," "financial performance," and "market economy." This indicates that ESG research has evolved from the initial stage of conceptual establishment to practical application and detailed case analysis. The study emphasizes that transparent disclosure of ESG information and the adoption of sustainable growth strategies are essential for enhancing corporate long-term growth and competitiveness.
