Asai Ryoi (birthdate unknown: - 1691), a Jodo Shinshu monk and author of Kanazoshi during Japan's early modern period, is recognized for his prolific and high-quality literary contributions. This drive stemmed from his keen understanding of publishing's potential to disseminate and preserve knowledge. His works serve as invaluable resources; not only for understanding East Asian literary history but also for illuminating the formation, reception, and transformation of Japan's moralistic-book culture.
This study offers new perspectives on the formation, reception, and transformation of the Japanese moralistic-book culture. This is achieved by focusing on the transmission and circulation of Chinese-influenced religious texts. The analysis delves into the context and surrounding circumstances of Ryoi's Kanninki and Ukiyomonogatari. Notably, the focus is on the publishing aspects of these works rather than on a literary analysis of individual themes or narratives. This study investigates the format in which the works were published; alongside the authors, publishers, readers, and competitors involved in their publication.
