In this study, we investigated acoustic vowel space characteristics of native and nonnative English vowels. The main focus of the study was on back monophthongs /ɑ, ɔ, ʊ, u/ and diphthongs with their onsets and offsets at the position back in vowel space such as /aʊ/ and /oʊ/. The speech data were collected by recording sentences including words with target English vowels. 5 American English speakers and 5 Korean learners of English participated in a reading task. The first and second formant frequency values of each vowel tokens were calculated and analyzed to identify the native and nonnative vowel space characteristics of English back vowels. Study results indicated that cross-language differences in vowel quality and vowel inventory affect the nonnative English vowels produced by Korean learners of English. It was observed that the native English vowel space is larger and the vowels are more dispersed in the vowel space, compared to the nonnative English vowel locations and vowel space. A noticeable characteristic of the nonnative English speech by Korean learners of English was the proximity of back vowels /u/, /ʊ/, and /ɔ/. The study results were discussed in relation to the native language transfer and the pedagogical implication for Korean learners of English.
