This study analyzes Tolstoy's The Cossacks from the perspective of its structural principles. In Tolstoy's literary world, truth emerges when objective reality is accepted as it is and when one's subjective world engages with this reality. The reason the protagonist Olenin struggles between Eroshka’s organic worldview and the moral code of self-sacrifice is because of the error of analyzing the sense of a transcendent world using reason. Accordingly, this study examines the self-deception and irony created by Olenin’s wandering reason. Furthermore, the lives of Olenin and the Cossacks are investigated under the assumption that the concept of free “boundary-crossing” reflects Eroshka’s organic worldview. The analysis suggests that while “boundary-crossing” symbolically represents the Cossacks’ life in harmony with the cyclical order of nature, it also serves as a motif revealing Olenin’s limitations, trapped within ideological confines. Thus, the literary quality of Tolstoy’s work arises from the organic correlation between theme and the narrative technique employed to realize this theme.
