This study highlights the process through which Koryŏ came to pay tribute to the Jin dynasty during the reign of King Injong, as well as the subsequent internal conflicts and confrontations within Koryŏ society regarding the continued tribute to Jin. The study interprets the turmoil within Koryŏ society surrounding the tribute to Jin as a dilemma. If Koryŏ followed the usual course of action by paying tribute to the most powerful nation in East Asia, Jin (previously Jurchen), which was also its neighboring state, discontent would arise from having to pay tribute to a nation that once submitted to Koryŏ. Conversely, if Koryŏ refused to establish or maintain a tributary relationship with Jin, it would become difficult to avoid a military confrontation with the powerful state.
Ultimately, Koryŏ decided to pay tribute to Jin to prevent a war with its powerful neighbor and continued this tributary relationship thereafter. This was a decision made despite widespread resentment against the reversal of roles, requiring Koryŏ to pay tribute to a former subordinate. Under these circumstances, resentment towards paying tribute to Jin persisted within the Koryŏ ruling class, and this discontent sometimes erupted through the actions of the Myocheong group, such as their calls for proclaiming Koryŏ as an imperial state to the outside world and for the conquest of the Jin state.
However, as Jin grew stronger, the movement to break away from the status quo and abandon the tributary relationship weakened over time, and with the failure of Myocheong’s rebellion, such resistance also disappeared.
