Purpose: To determine the relationship between the nursing professionalism, self-leadership, and political competence of nursing students, and to identify the factors influencing political competence in nursing. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 194 fourth-year nursing students from Cities C, B, and U. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: The total score was 3.76 for nursing professionalism, 3.34 for self-leadership, and 3.20 for political competence on a 5-point scale. Significant positive correlations were found between nursing professionalism and self-leadership (r=.46,p<.001), political competence and nursing professionalism (r=.39, p<.001), and political competence and self-leadership (r=.44, p<.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that among the general characteristics, participation in nursing professionalism (β=.26, p=<.001), self-leadership (β=.25, p=.001) and political education (β=-.24, p=<.001), were the factors affecting political competence, and the explanatory power of this model was 30.6% (F=13.13,p<.001). Conclusion: To improve the political competence of nursing students, self-leadership training is necessary to develop their personal interest in politics. Thus curricular and co-curricular programs to foster political competence relevant to the nursing profession needs to be developed and implemented from the beginning of the nursing course.
