The development of digital video technology and the increasing production of ultra-high-definition (UHD) content have highlighted the importance of color spaces and color management systems. Consistent color processing is essential, especially when handling various log formats in 4K, 8K, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) workflows. However, novice video producers often struggle to effectively utilize color spaces and color grading due to a lack of understanding. This study explores the theoretical background of color spaces and compares color grading workflows by integrating Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and After Effects with the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) framework, aiming to provide a practical guide for novice video producers to efficiently perform color grading tasks.
Premiere Pro is widely recognized for its intuitive and user-friendly interface but does not natively support advanced color spaces like ACES. To achieve high-quality color grading, integration with tools like DaVinci Resolve or After Effects is required. DaVinci Resolve supports ACES and features a node-based structure that provides a visual and systematic workflow, enabling precise color grading and flexible adjustments. This approach ensures efficient handling of complex color grading tasks while maintaining consistent colors.
Conversely, After Effects leverages OpenColorIO (OCIO) to facilitate seamless ACES color space conversions and supports dynamic linking with Premiere Pro for real - time workflow integration. This real - time linking significantly enhances workflow efficiency and enables flexible updates during the editing process.
A comparative analysis of these integrated workflows revealed that novice users prefer After Effects due to its intuitive interface and real-time linking features. However, projects requiring precise and advanced color grading showed higher satisfaction levels with DaVinci Resolve.
This study aims to enhance novice video producers ’ understanding of color spaces and provide foundational insights to select appropriate color grading workflows based on project characteristics. Future research will explore a broader range of camera formats and color space conversions to optimize post-production efficiency and establish a comprehensive color grading guide for practical applications.
