This study aims to review linguistic landscape research in the field of linguistics in Korea, identify areas for improvement, and propose future directions. To achieve this, it organizes the definitions and classifications of linguistic landscapes based on the findings of prior international studies. Among 382 domestic studies containing the term “linguistic landscape,” 72 studies were selected for detailed analysis based on the criterion of directly analyzing and interpreting linguistic data. These studies were analyzed in depth using both external and internal criteria. The results revealed that linguistic landscape research in South Korea remains an emerging field in terms of timeline, researchers, and research domains.
To ensure meaningful and persuasive progress in linguistic landscape research, the following recommendations are proposed: First, establish specific criteria for collecting and analyzing linguistic data in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Second, actively incorporate diverse theoretical frameworks and methodologies from international research to better align with the unique characteristics of individual studies. Third, actively explore the potential of regional research. Finally, clarify the distinction between written scripts and languages, emphasizing that linguistic landscape research focuses primarily on written language, unlike spoken language, which has traditionally been the main focus of linguistics.
This study identifies and addresses the methodological and thematic gaps in the emerging field of linguistic landscape research in South Korea. It aims to provide meaningful data that can serve as a foundational resource for subsequent studies, contributing to the efficiency and qualitative growth of linguistic landscape research in Korea.
