The concept of polyphony has been commonly used in both studies of Chekhov's novels and drama, but despite the essential differences between the two literary forms, there has been no elaborate conceptual arrangement for the use of the term polyphony. This study will summarize examples of application of the concept of polyphony mentioned in Chekhov's research and present an integrated perspective on Chekhov's creations, which have been studied separately in the fields of novels and dramas. To this end, this paper will examine Bakhtin's conflicting evaluations of the possibility of the existence of polyphonic novels and polyphonic dramas, the background to the introduction of the concept of polyphony in Chekhov's novels, and the inconsistent application of polyphonic terms to Chekhov's dramas.
