Phrases and vocabulary are the fundamental units of grammatical research, and the perspective that Japanese phrases consist of propositions and modalities has become a basic common understanding within the Japanese linguistic community.
The study of modality in Japanese holds significant importance in elucidating the essence of Japanese phrases and is an unavoidable theme. This research, based on 812 documents recorded in the Japanese Language Research and Japanese Language Education Literature Database constructed by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, conducts a quantitative and visualization analysis using R software on contemporary Japanese modality research papers published from 1972 to 2022. The analysis results indicate that Japanese modality research over a 51-year period has gone through three stages: an initial stage, a development stage, and a maturity/decline stage. The content of research has transitioned from simple conceptual and systemic studies to complex studies of modality expression types and categories. Furthermore, the research perspectives have expanded from singular comparative and phraseological studies to diverse studies in cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, and corpus linguistics.
It is suggested that future contemporary Japanese modality research can provide new directions for Japanese modality studies by leveraging the strengths of multidisciplinary fields, such as interpersonal pragmatics.
