This study quantitatively and qualitatively revealed the relationship between resilience and competitive levels in student golfers. The participants were 30 student golfers who had performed at national competitions (Group A) and 30 student golfers who had not (Group B). The Adolescent Resilience Scale (ARS; Oshio et al., 2002) was used for quantitative evaluation, and an open-ended questionnaire on resilience was used for qualitative evaluation. Group A had a significantly higher total ARS score and score for “Positive Future Orientation,” one of the ARS factors, than Group B using an unpaired t-test. All responses were classified into those that displayed resilience and those that did not in the qualitative evaluation. Moreover, two different concepts emerged: “resilience in competitive performance situation,” which means positive adaptation during performance, and “resilience in athletic life,” which means positive adaptation from adversities encountered in athletic life. A chi-square test was conducted to analyse the relationship between resilience and competitive level in each situation. “Resilience in athletic life” and competitive level were not significantly associated, but “resilience in competitive performance situation” and competitive level were. These results indicated that displaying “resilience in competitive performance situation” is an important psychological factor in golfers’ competitive ability.
