The objective of this paper is to discuss the issue of wounds and healing in medieval Arthurian literature produced and circulated from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries in Britain and Europe. To establish the socio-cultural context for discussion, major perspectives, beliefs, theories, and practices regarding medicine and the healing arts in high and late medieval Europe are first examined. Then, Arthurian texts are placed in three groups and investigated separately. First, the representation of wounds and healing in Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur is examined with a focus on the use of three Middle English words: “leche,” “surgeon,” and “serchen.” Second, episodes from several medieval Arthurian romances, in which healing occurs by miracle and magic, not by medicine or surgery, are analyzed. Finally, what Morgan le Fay is like when she debuts as the first Arthurian healer, not as a wicked sorceress, in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Vita Merlini, is illuminated.
