The discussions about ‘what is a family?’ is actively taking place in modern society. Even among individuals with the same family composition, the perceived boundary of family can vary. This study conducted 12 in-depth interviews with people living in parent-child households, which have long been regarded as a ‘normal family’, to investigate the perceptual conditions that determine the boundary of the family in modern society. By doing so, the study sought to examine how they perceive the scope and boundary of their families and what is the contextual background of such perceptions. The finding indicates that even among those with identical family composition, the perceived range of ‘my family’ varies. The traditional family constructs such as marriage, blood ties and cohabitation was still valid in modern society, but the perceived range of the family dynamically changed according to how one perceives the life and death of one’s parents, the birth and marriage of children, the past experiences from the original family, and the cooperation and intimacy within important family tasks. Furthermore, some participants adjusted the boundaries of their families to take advantage of policies such as housing benefits, while others perceived the scope of the family differently based on the family representations depicted in the media. These results highlighted the necessity of dynamically understanding the boundaries of the family in modern society, and provided policy and practical implications.
