Countries around the world have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and are actively developing policies related to this goal, making concerted efforts to combat climate change. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) assesses the sustainability of educational institutions and publishes rankings. By leveraging these evaluation systems, universities are being motivated to compete in creating carbon-neutral campuses. In South Korea, as of 2023, only three universities have made a carbon neutrality declaration. This study investigates the current state and sustainability levels of universities that have declared carbon neutrality through both domestic and international case studies and key strategies. It outlines a methodology for creating carbon-neutral scenarios for university campuses by organizing the necessary data, analysis methods, and step-by-step strategies for planning carbon neutrality on campuses. University campus buildings represent a considerable portion of energy consumption. The study examines the energy consumption patterns of campus buildings and suggests retrofit plans to reduce energy use in cooling, heating, and ventilation, aiming to meet zero-energy building standards. The objective of this study is to propose a methodology for forming carbon-neutral scenarios that reduce energy consumption in buildings and employ renewable energy to achieve the ultimate goal. The strategic processes outlined in this study will be beneficial for universities in planning their carbon neutrality initiatives.
