Global freshwater demand is one of the most crucial problems for human life. Wastewater has become a valuable resource for water as well as energy and nutrients. Membrane heat exchangers have been demonstrated to have high efficiency on heat and water vapor recovery. In this study, a membrane heat exchanger was developed using Kaolin ceramic membrane to recovery heat and waste vapor from gaseous steam. A steam generator and a temperature controlled blower are employed to supply vapor steam at a specific temperature. A cooling water bath is used to condensate and recover water vapor. A sonic water level sensor is used to obtain the amount of recovered water. Effects of operating conditions on water and heat recovery are studied. Ceramic membranes have shown a great recovery performance under different operating conditions.
Additionally, a computational fluid dynamics model is developed based on the experimental setup and results. The volume of fluid model is used to capture the interface between water liquid and vapor. The Lee model is applied to predict the evaporation – condensation behavior of saturated air. The simulation results obtained a great agreement with the experimental data.
