This study aims to develop specialized workwear for overhead (OH) welding, focusing on the ergonomic and safety challenges posed by the OH posture. The job posture involves working with the welding target positioned overhead, causing high physical strain and significant safety hazards, such as burns. A survey was conducted with 207 participants, assessing the current state of workwear use, worker preferences, and the perceived necessity for specialized welding workwear. The findings highlighted that workers prioritize ‘safety against sparks and flames’ and ‘flexibility and ease of movement’ as essential features. Additionally, the preferences for two-piece workwear and metallic zippers were predominant. Differences in requirements were observed between novice and experienced workers, with novices emphasizing safety and flame-resistant materials and experienced workers prioritizing lightweight and breathable designs for extended wear. Based on the results, this study recommends the development of workwear using fire-resistant and flame-retardant materials, incorporating convenient closure systems like metallic zippers, while integrating lightweight designs to minimize fatigue during prolonged use. Although this study provides foundational data through a survey-based approach, it is limited by the absence of real-world testing. Future research should involve field trials of the proposed designs and consider the diverse working environments to refine the development process. Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of combining safety and functionality in specialized welding workwear to reduce risks and enhance productivity in demanding work conditions.
