This study examines the Korean kana transcription of vowels found in 'Records of the Attendants of the Korean Envoy and Korean-Japanese Translation,' part of the Saito Family Documents housed at the Nagasaki Prefectural Tsushima History Research Center. In this study, the transcription system of vowels was examined by comparing the kana notation with the reconstructed Hangul forms. When necessary, comparisons were also made with existing materials of Korean kana notation.
First, the monophthongs (1) reflect the process of the non-phonemicization of the first syllable 'ㆍ'. (2) The notation that adds 'ヲ' after the kana representing 'ㅓ(ə)' and 'ㅜ(u)' indicates the rising tone or long vowels in Middle Korean. (3) A tendency where 'ㅓ(ə)' in the second or later syllables shifts towards a bright vowel (low back vowel). was also observed. Regarding the rising diphthongs, signs of monophthongization were observed. (4) The sound "ㅕ(yə)" was generally represented by "エ段のカナ" in both initial and non-initial syllables, suggesting. that "ㅓ" has fronted vowels, and that [ə] hads changed to [e], indicating a certain degree of monophtongization of the diphthong. (5) The sound "ㅚ(oi)" was found to occur exclusively in non-initial syllables, generally represented by "エ段のカナ".
