This study aims to identify research trends on idle spaces and explore efficient utilization strategies. Idle spaces refer to areas that have lost their original purpose or are not being utilized efficiently, including vacant buildings, public lots, and unused industrial sites. With low birth rates, population aging, and economic stagnation, space demand is decreasing, while idle spaces are increasing, leading to issues such as crime risks, social disconnection, economic losses, and environmental resource waste. Therefore, this study analyzes the trends and evolving directions of idle space utilization and explores strategic approaches to provide a foundational resource for future research and urban regeneration projects. The study focuses on 130 papers indexed in KCI (Korea Citation Index) and uses RISS, KISS, ScienceON, AURIC, and DBpia to collect relevant literature. Frequency and percentage analyses were conducted to systematically understand research trends. This research anticipates that future studies will focus on interdisciplinary collaborations to propose innovative designs and policy recommendations, contributing to the sustainable development of cities and enhancing spatial connectivity through comprehensive research efforts.
