This study investigated whether the word composite effect—an automatic processing phenomenon where entire words are processed even when only part of the stimulus is attended to—is a cross-linguistic effect applicable to the Korean language. To explore this effect, the study employed a same-different task in which participants were presented with two words and asked to determine whether the first syllables of these words matched. In the first experiment, the word composite effect was not statistically significant. The study attributed the absence of the word composite effect to a response bias among participants. To address this issue, we modified the experimental instructions for Experiment 2 to eliminate this response bias. In Experiment 2, the study observed the expected significant word composite effect. Based on these findings, the study proposed that the word composite effect may be a cross-linguistic phenomenon and described its implications for word recognition models in the discussion section.
