This study investigated the effects of phosphorus (P) deficiency on the growth and physiological responses of leaf perilla (Perilla frutescens) cultivated hydroponically using the deep flow technique (DFT). Phosphorus deprivation was induced by modifying the standard Yamazaki nutrient solution to create five deficiency levels: 0% (control), 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100%. Significant reductions in plant height, number of leaves, number of nodes, and stem diameter were observed with increasing P deficiency from 20 to 80 days after treatment. At 80 days, complete phosphorus deficiency (100%) resulted in a severe suppression of growth, reducing plant height and leaf number to 10.1 ㎝ and 2.7 leaves per plant, respectively, compared to 73.5 ㎝ and 12.8 leaves in the control. Fresh and dry weight also declined drastically under phosphorus-deficient conditions. Total fresh weight dropped from 93.4 g in the control to 2.1 g under 100% deficiency, while dry weight decreased from 11.8 g to 0.4 g per plant. Physiological disorders such as Chlorosis and necrosis of lower leaves were prominent under high deficiency levels. These findings underscore the critical role of phosphorus in supporting vegetative growth and biomass production in leaf perilla and provide a foundational reference for optimizing nutrient formulations in hydroponic systems to ensure sustainable crop productivity.
