ABSTRACTThe effect of myofascial release and stone therapy on the upper trapezius muscle and emotional indicatorsKim, So YeonAlternative MedicineGraduate School of Kwangju Women''s UniversityThe objective of this study is to explore an effect of myofacial release therapy and stone therapy on upper trapezius and emotional index (depression, stress and psychological well-being) when above two therapies are performed in parallel. Housewives in their 30-50th who had shoulder pain but their disease was not determined yet by diagnosis were targeted for this study and these subjects were divided into experiment group (10 persons) who underwent myofacial release therapy and stone therapy in parallel and control group (1p persons) who underwent myofacial release therapy only, respectively. As a study method, muscle tension (tone) of left upper trapezius was measured by myotonometer, that of shoulder pain was measured by VAS (Visual Analog Scale) and emotional index was measured by using PSS, BDI and PWSS and the test result was analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 program. When observing the result of muscle tone variation depending on each force (0.25kg, 0.5kg, 0.75kg, 1.0kg, 1.25kg, 1.5kg, 1.75kg, 2.0kg) of myotonometer, both group (a group who received myofacial release therapy only and other group that received received myofacial release therapy and stone therapy in parallel) showed significant effect by each group within confidence interval of p<0.05 but an effect between two groups did not show any significant difference.Experiment group showed a significant effect as VAS that is shoulder pain variation was P=.010 but control group did not show a significant effect as VAS was P=.342. In case of an effective difference between two groups, it was analyzed that an effective difference between experiment group and control was not significant as interaction effect by each group and timing was P=0.107.As variation of depression level of experiment group was P=.012, a significant effect was represented and as that of control group was P=.000, significant effect was also represented in this group. But in case of an effective difference between two groups, a significant difference was not represented as interaction effect by each group and timing was P=0.511. As variation of stress level of experiment group was P=0.039, a significant effect was represented but as that of control group was P=.290, a significant difference was not represented in this group. In case of an effective difference between two groups, it was not represented as interaction effect by each group and timing was P=0.164.As variation of psychological well-being of experiment group was P=0.083 based on confidence interval of P<0.10, a significant difference was represented but as that of control group was P=.0891, a significant difference was not represented in this group. But in case of an effective difference between two groups, as interaction effect by each group and timing was P=0.042, more effective significant difference was represented in variation of psychological well-being level when myofacial release therapy and stone therapy were performed in parallel.Through the result of above study, it could be realized that both cases (one case of performing myofacial release therapy only and other case of performing myofacial release therapy and stone therapy in parallel) were proved to be effective for mitigating muscle tone and depression level but an effective difference between these two methods was not represented. But in case of performing myofacial release therapy only, a numerical variation of shoulder pain, stress level and psychological well-being was not represented but it was hard to consider such result to be ''significant''. But when performing stone therapy in parallel, a significant effect was represented in such variables as a whole. When talking about therapy, everybody naturally expects that emotional aspect as well as physical problem would be treated by this therapy and it provide an effect of self therapeutic ability.Under this background, it is considered that if a long-term experiment should be performed based on the result of this study that provides an effect even in an emotional aspect by performing stone therapy and myofacial release therapy in parallel, a therapy like stone therapy be practiced and therapeutic method considering the condition of the patients be implemented, performing both therapies rather than performing myofacial release therapy only would be more effective in terms of both physical and emotional aspects.key words : Stone therapy, Myofacial Release , upper trapezius, emotional indicator, housewife
