Chil-sa Head-wear of Goryeo dynasty era is the lacquered head-wear with a combination of a variety of materials such as fabric and lacquer. And, there is the records as Bokdu-sa(?頭紗) 40 mea(枚) and Moja-sa(帽子紗) 20 mea(枚) in documents on the exchange-good lists from Goryeo dynasty to Song dynasty. Referring to the unit as Mea(枚), it is estimated that Bokdu-sa(?頭紗) was not soft forms those days and was lacquered states(漆) as transformational materials with primary process to plate structure(板).
It is hard to know accurate shapes of head-wears from Goryeo dynasty era because some literatures except for <Goryeosa> and <Goryeodokyung>, buddhist paintings, portraits and existing cultural properties of Goryeo dynasty era are relatively less than those of Joseon dynasty era. From now the research and investigation on Bulbokjang objects and traditional painting have been proceeded as study associated with the textile and costume on Goryeo dynasty era. Nevertheless, the researches on theoretical consideration and conservation treatment investigation are insufficient with existential remains excavated from ancient sites so far.
Cil-sa head-wear in this study is precious and existential relics excavated from an ancient tomb and shows corroborative evidences about the real ancient life dated from Goryeo dynasty era. Also, it contains the historical, cultural, social and artistic values because this shows head-wear system at the period of Goryeo dynasty with the invaluable merit in the field of Korean traditional costumes.
The purposes of this study are to recover and maintain the original states of the artifacts from various environmental factors and then to preserve the materials from rapid decomposition. And, the research and study were progressed through theoretical consideration, conservation treatment investigation and analysis of material and constitution. However, there was limitation for analysis and discrimination of materials because the lacquer was absorbed through fibers.
Nevertheless, some of important parts in this remains were left over without dismantling and then conservation treatment was proceeded to turn back to the original states. Through dismantling and cleaning process, each processes were recorded with photography and the pieces were arranged to original position so that in-depth study on original state was made a progress for the future.
