LAT(Laser assisted Turning) is one of the advanced machining technologies, which uses laser power to heat the surface of a workpiece before the material is removed. LAT has several advantages of low manufacturing costs, high productivity and high qualities to machine various kinds of materials. However, Studies on LAT are still staying at the beginning of research and represent a limitation in which a LAT process was applied to round workpiece only. Therefore, LATM(Laser assisted Turn-Mill) is proposed in this study for machining complex geometries, such as square and spline workpiece. In the case of LATM processes, it is more difficult to estimate the temperature after preheating because it has a shape of ellipse when a laser heat source is rotated.
In this paper the temperature distribution according to the rotation of the workpieces are predicted. The results are compared with the LATM experiment and analyzed. Also, cutting forces, surface roughness are measured and analyzed to compared with the LATM and conventional turn-mill.
