In this study, the mechanical properties of aluminum honeycomb composite material with varied skins had been examined and damages of surface had been observed by using microscopy after low velocity impact behaviors by drop weight impact test. Further nonlinear impact interpretation simulation was performed using finite element method (FEM) to evaluate the aluminum honeycomb skin changing effects under different impact energies.
1) It can be identified as excellent mechanical property of GAG sandwich panel having higher tensile strength, flexural strength, compression strength than AAA sandwich panel that is adopted in various fields now.
2) In impact weight, impact speed and impact weight are increased and time to reach to maximum impact weight gets short if impact energy gets high to impact body. AAA sandwich panel is strong to impact if honeycomb core is small but it got permanent strain that is dug in skin even though there was small impact energy. But GAG sandwich panel is strong and has excellent impact property because it shows little damage deep and damage area as honeycomb core is wide.
3) Impact behavior was looked through nonlinear impact interpretation using finite element analysis. In the result, it consumes same energy about impact energy of 10J and takes long for reaching time to maximum stress of GAG sandwich panel. In addition, it has smaller plastic deformation area.
Through this study, result that GAG sandwich panel has high hardness and strength keeping low weight was shown. So GAG sandwich panel will be applied to various field such as interior material and partition of train, interior material of top car, bathroom partition.
