Tool steels serve a large range of application including hot and cold working for metals and injection molding of plastic or light alloys. As one of tool steels, high speed steel (HSS) are specifically used as cutting tools and wear parts, for its high strength, wear resistance and hardness with appreciable toughness and fatigue resistance, and also it can be described as metallic matrix composites formed by a ferrous matrix and dispersed hard carbides with wear-resistant properties from the view of its microstructure.
In this study the experimental specimens were manufactured by powder injection molding (PIM) process using by mixture T42 base powders (52 vol.%) and multi-binders (48 vol.%). The green parts were debinded in n-hexane solution at 60℃ for 8 hours and thermal debinded at N2-H2 mixed gas atmosphere for 8 hours. Specimens were sintered in vacuum (10-3 Torr) and at various sintering temperatures. When specimen was sintered at 1260℃ in vacuum, the highest hardness of 550 Hv was obtained, and the carbides were smaller than 1 ㎛, and the grain size was about 10 ㎛ and well distributed. When specimens were sintered over 1280℃in vacuum, carbides were changed to eutectic carbide and located at matrix. After sintering process, the specimens were reheated in vacuum from 1000 to 1300℃ for 1 hour, and then oil-quenched in oil. And the hardness of 800 Hv and full density can be obtained after oil-quenched from 1200℃. Finally, the oil-quenched tempered specimens were at 540, 560, 580 and 600℃ respectively for 60mins in N2 atmosphere. The specimen tempered at 560℃ has the homogeneous carbides distribution and precipitation, as a matter of course, the highest hardness of 820 Hv in this study was obtained.
