The goal of this study is to develop an empirical algorithm for the detection of precursory signals of Thunderstorm Initiation(TI) over South Korea using Community, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite(COMS) Meteorological Imager(MI) data. For derivation of empirical threshold values of various optical properties (reflectivity, brightness temperature and their differences, etc based on the day and night time), 14 cases of thunderstorms occurred two summer season (May∼August) of 2011 and 2012 were selected. The thunderstorm potential area was decided when the 13(8) of the 14 (9) empirical criteria were satisfied for the day(night) time. The detection results using the empirical threshold values derived from this study showed that the thunderstorm can be detected by COMS images prior to about 35 minutes although its detection skills are clearly dependent on the analysis cases.
