본 연구는 그림책 서평의 발전적 토대를 마련하고 서평의 생산자로 사서의 전문영역을 확장하는데 기여하고자, 첫째, 질적으로 우수한 그림책 서평이 기본적으로 갖추어야 할 바람직한 서평기준을 도출하고, 둘째, 바람직한 서평기준이 우리나라에서 발행되고 있는 그림책 서평에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는지를 분석하였다. 연구방법으로는 문헌연구, 델파이 기법, 내용분석법을 사용하였다.
질적으로 우수한 그림책 서평이 갖추어야 할 기준은 국내와 국외의 선행 문헌연구를 통하여 픽션 그림책 서평과 논픽션 그림책 서평의 분석유목을 설정한 뒤, 국내 그림책 관련 전문가로 구성된 10명의 패널과 2차에 걸친 델파이 조사와 합의를 통하여 최종적으로 확정하였다. 그림책 서평의 바람직한 서평기준은 ‘서지 및 주문정보’, 서평의 서술방법과 세부 내용을 측정할 수 있는 ‘서평의 내용’으로 ‘기술적 서술’과 ‘평가적 서술’로 구분하였다. 서지 및 주문 정보에는 서명, 저자/삽화가/번역자, 출판사, 출판일이 포함된다. 서평의 내용 중 기술적 서술에는 내용 설명, 문학적 요소, 미술적 요소, 유용성 요소가 있다. 평가적 서술에는 적절한 독자연령이나 학년, 같은 저자나 삽화가의 작품, 유사한 작품과의 비교, 글과 그림의 조화와 적절성, 서평자의 개인적인 견해, 도서의 우수성과 단점, 교과목이나 특정한 상황에서의 이용 가능성, 문학적 질의 판단, 예술적 질의 판단, 유용성의 판단이 포함된다.
바람직한 그림책 서평기준을 가지고 2003년부터 2012년까지 국내 정기간행물 중 『동아일보』와 『조선일보』, 『열린어린이』와 『학교도서관저널』에 수록된 픽션 그림책 723건, 논픽션 그림책 274건 등 997건의 그림책 서평을 내용분석하였으며, 교차분석과 분산분석을 통하여 통계적 유의차를 검증하였다.
서지 및 주문정보에서 서명은 모든 그림책 서평에서 제시되었다. 다음으로 저자/삽화가/번역자, 출판사, 출판일 순으로 나타났다. 서평의 내용에서 기술적 서술은 내용 설명이 90.4%로 대부분의 그림책 서평에서 가장 많이 기술되고 있었다. 문학적 요소는 인물, 배경, 주제, 구성, 시점, 문체 순으로 나타났다. 미술적 요소는 매체, 색, 구성, 그림 스타일, 선, 질감, 모양 순으로 나타났다. 유용성 요소는 내용의 적절성, 조직 및 배열, 정보의 정확성, 저자의 권위로 다른 기술적 서평기준보다 빈도가 높았다. 전체적으로 기술적 서술에서의 개별 서평기준으로 볼 때 내용 설명이 가장 많았고, 다음으로 유용성 요소, 문학적 요소, 미술적 요소의 순으로 나타났다. 평가적 서술에서는 적절한 독자연령이나 학년, 서평자의 개인적인 견해, 교과목이나 특정한 상황에서의 이용가능성, 도서의 우수성과 단점, 글과 그림의 조화와 적절성, 예술적 질의 판단, 같은 저자나 삽화가의 작품, 유사한 작품과의 비교, 유용성의 판단, 문학적 질의 판단의 순으로 나타났다. 매체별로는 빈도분석으로 보았을 때, 기술적 서술에서 픽션 그림책 서평과 논픽션 그림책 서평 모두 『열린어린이』, 『학교도서관저널』, 『조선일보』, 『동아일보』의 순위를 나타냈으며, 평가적 서술에서는 『학교도서관저널』, 『동아일보』, 『열린어린이』, 『조선일보』의 순위를 나타냈다. 서평자 직업과 서평 분량에 따른 서평내용의 차이를 분석한 결과 그림책 전문가와 평론가, 그림책 작가가 질적으로 우수한 서평을 쓰고 있었고, 서평분량이 많을수록 우수한 서평기준에 더 충족하고 있었다.
향후 그림책 서평의 바람직한 기준에 맞는 우수한 서평이 더 생산되어야 하며, 기술적 서술보다 평가적 서술의 내용이 많아져야 한다. 우수한 그림책 서평을 위하여 서평자는 문학과 미술에 관한 전문지식이 필요하며, 일정분량 이상의 서평이 필요하다. 서평 작성자로서 사서의 역할이 더욱 확대되어야 할 것이다.

The aim of this study is to provide an expansive foundation for book review assessment and thereby to extend the librarians'' role to the producers of book reviews. First, the study examines extensive literature in order to derive desirable criteria suitable for ideal picture book reviews. Second, it analyzes how those criteria are being materialized in reviews of picture books that appear in selected Korean periodicals. The study uses multitudes of methods including literature research, Delphi technique and content analysis method.
The desirable review criteria are divided into ''bibliographic and ordering information'', ''the descriptive statements'' and the ''evaluative statements'' depending on ''the content of book review''. The title, the author/illustrator/translator, the publisher, and the publication date are included in the bibliographic and ordering information. In the content of book review, the descriptive statements contain the description of the content, literary elements, visual and usability elements. The evaluative statements contain proper age-reader or the grade, comparison with the works of the same author, illustrator or similar works, appropriateness of the art to the text, reviewer''s personal opinion, strengths and weaknesses of the book, possibilities in the particular educational subjects or environments, judgment of literary quality, judgment of artistic quality, and judgment of usability.
With the derived desirable review criteria, we analyzed the contents of 997 picture book reviews from 723 fiction picture books, 274 nonfiction books included in ''The Dong-A Ilbo'', ''The Chosun Ilbo'', ''Openkid'' and ''School Library Journal'' among domestic periodicals published between 2003 and 2012.
In the bibliographic and ordering information, the title was mentioned in all picture book reviews and the author/illustrator/translator, the publisher, the publication date were mentioned almost universally. As for the content of reviews, the description of content appeared the most, followed by the usability element, literary element and visual element among the descriptive statements. Among the evaluative statements, the following elements appear in descending frequencies: proper age-reader or the grade, the reviewer''s personal opinion, possibilities in the particular educational subjects or environments, strengths and weaknesses of the book, appropriateness of the art to the text, judgment of artistic quality, comparison with the works of the same author, illustrator or similar works, judgment of usability and judgment of literary quality.
In terms of frequencies of descriptive statements for both fiction and nonfiction picture book reviews, reviews included in ''Openkid'' show the highest frequencies, followed by ''School Library Journal'', and then ''The Chosun Ilbo'' and ''The Dong-A Ilbo''. Among the evaluative statements, reviews in ''School Library Journal'' show the highest fidelity, followed by ''The Dong-A Ilbo'', ''Openkid'', and ''The Chosun Ilbo''.
The results of the book review quality based on reviewers'' occupations and the length of book reviews show that picture book specialists, book critics and picture book authors write qualitatively better reviews and the length of book reviews significantly contribute to the fulfillment of desirable book review criteria.
