최근 공연예술은 재미와 지식을 제공하고 다양한 목적에 의해 연출되며, 동시에 교육을 위한 하나의 수단으로 사용되기도 한다. 본 연구 대상인 ‘미디어 어린이 영어뮤지컬 마술피리’는 이를 반영한 공연으로써, 인천광역시가 주최하고 인천정보산업진흥원과 인하대학교 문화예술교육원이 주관하여 국내 최초로 시도되는 융합(STEAM : Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)형 교육 콘텐츠로, 교육을 목적으로 하는 공연이다. 연구자는 무대의상 제작에 참여하였고, 일반적인 공연이 아닌 교육적 목적과 의도에 맞게 무대의상을 디자인하고 제작하는 것을 목적으로 본 연구를 진행하였다.

본 연구는 <마술피리> 기존 공연을 분석하는 단계와 ‘미디어 어린이 영어뮤지컬 마술피리’의 무대의상 디자인 및 제작단계로 구성되었으며, 연구방법 및 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 기존의 <마술피리> 공연을 무대 디자인 및 무대의상 디자인을 컨셉(concept)별로 분류하고 분석하여, 그 특징을 살펴보았다.
둘째, ‘미디어 어린이 영어뮤지컬 마술피리’의 대본을 분석하여 등장인물별 성격 및 특징을 분석하였다.
셋째, 기존에 공연된 <마술피리>의 무대의상 디자인 분석과 본 연구 대상인 공연의 대본에 나타난 등장인물의 성격 및 특징 분석을 바탕으로 무대의상 디자인 컨셉을 전개하였다.
넷째, 배역별 무대의상을 제작하고 패턴제도법과 재단, 봉제법 등을 제시하였다.

연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 현재까지 공연되어왔던 <마술피리> 공연 중, 동영상 수집이 가능한 10개의 국외 작품을 가지고 무대디자인과 무대의상 디자인에 관하여 분석하였다. 컨셉은 사실적, 현대적, 판타지적, 그래픽적, 역사적으로 분류할 수 있었다. 사실적 컨셉은 원작의 시대배경과 인물을 그대로 반영하여 재현하였다. 현대적 컨셉은 현재의 시점으로 현대적 시설이나 의상으로 구성되었으며, 환상적 컨셉은 다양한 퍼포먼스와 큰 조형물, 과장된 실루엣이 의상으로 환상적인 분위기를 조성하였다. 그래픽적 컨셉은 특별한 장식 없이, 비비드한 색상의 사용과 단순화시킨 형태들도 구성되었고, 역사적 컨셉은 일정시대나 장소를 명확히 연상시키는 세밀한 무대와 의상 형태로 구성되었다.
둘째, 기존에 공연된 무대의상 디자인 분석과 본 연구대상인 공연의 대본에 나타난 등장인물의 성격 및 특징 분석을 바탕으로, 전체적인 무대의상 디자인 방향을 다음과 같이 정하였다.
‘미디어 어린이 영어뮤지컬 마술피리’에서 등장하는 배역은 타미노, 파미나, 파파게노, 시녀, 동자, 새의요정, 합창단 총 7명이고, 뮤지컬, 음악, 영어, 무용, 과학 등이 포함된 공연이다. 무대세트는 전혀 사용하지 않고 영상으로 모든 무대디자인을 대신하였으므로, 영상아래에서 의상 실루엣이 잘 보이도록 하였고, 흰색을 많이 사용하였다. 영상과 조명을 받는 동자와 합창단은 그랙픽적 요소의 단순성을 도입하여 디자인 하였다. 초등학생을 대상으로 하므로, 시점적용이 명확하지 않은 무대디자인의 결점을 보완하기 위해 타미노, 파미나, 시녀들의 의상은 역사적 요소를 도입하여 디자인하고, 파파게노와 새의요정은 우스꽝스럽고 과장되게 표현하여 환상적인 묘사를 하였다.
등장인물별 디자인 컨셉은 다음과 같다.
타미노는 용감하고 진취적인 이집트의 왕자로, 빨강색을 사용하여 강인한 이미지를 표현하였다. 파미나는 밤의여왕의 딸이며 솔직한 인물로, 자신의 마음가짐이 잘 표현될 수 있도록 화려한 디테일을 적게 사용하는 대신 레이스 원단을 사용하였다. 파파게노는 겁이 많고 허세스러운 인물로, 과장된 동작을 드러내기 위해 움직임이 강조되는 조각디테일을 사용하였고, 시녀는 밤의여왕에 복종하는 인물들로, 머리부터 발끝까지 검정색을 사용하여 어두운 이미지를 표현했다. 동자는 선하고 진실한 인물로 전체적으로 흰색을 사용하여 밝은 이미지를 표현했으며, 새의요정은 활발하게 등장하여 자신들을 소개하는 모습을 위해 발랄한 색상을 사용하여 새의 종류가 연상되도록 하였다. 합창단은 자라스트로를 칭송하는 역할로, 개선행렬을 표현하기 위해 크고 단순한 디테일을 사용하였다.
셋째, ‘미디어 어린이 영어뮤지컬 마술피리’의 무대의상을 제작하는데 있어 많은 인원이 착용가능하게 제작하는 것이 제일 중요하였다.
이를 위해, 사이즈 계측 및 확정을 하였다. 초등학생 211명과 영어뮤지컬 강사 5명, 성인 전문연기자 5명의 사이즈를 계측하였으며, 초등학생 배역의 타미노, 파미나, 시녀, 동자, 합창단은 S(small)와 L(large) 두 가지 사이즈로 분류하여 제작하였다.
무대의상 구성상 특징은 먼저, 유니타드와 레오타드를 적극 사용하여 제작하였다. 유니타드와 레오타드는 신축성이 있어 많은 인원이 공유할 수 있었다. 또한, 조절장치를 의상에 넣어 사이즈를 자유롭게 하였다. 허리에 밴드를 넣거나 끈을 사용하여 하나의 의상에서도 사이즈 조절이 가능하도록 하였으며, 평면적 구성으로 의상을 단순화하여 다양한 사이즈에 구애받지 않도록 하였다. 그리고 봉제과정을 단순화하여 짧은 시간 내에 많은 의상을 완성할 수 있도록 하였다.
의상제작을 7종류의 등장인물을 위한 무대의상이 총 69벌 제작되었으며, 등장인물별 디자인, 작업지시서, 소재, 패턴, 재단, 봉제법이 제시되었다. 본 연구를 통해, 마술피리 무대의상이 개발되었을 뿐 아니라, 디자인에서 제작에 이르기까지 세밀하게 제시된 자체적인 프로세스는 교육콘텐츠로 사용할 수 있다는데 큰 의의가 있다고 사료된다.

Performing arts offer fun and knowledge and are directed for various purposes. Performing arts are also used as a means for education. Children''s English media musical, "the Magic Flute," is the performance reflecting all these. The Magic Flute, hosted by Incheon Metropolitan City and sponsored by Incheon Information Service and Inha University''s Arts and Culture Education Service is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) mode of education content, attempted for the first time in Korea. The performance actually aims at education. The author of this study took part in stage costume production, and this study was carried out aiming at designing and producing stage costume in line with educational purpose and intention.
This study consists of an analysis stage for the existing performances of the Magic Flute, and a stage costume design and production stage for children''s English media musical, "the Magic Flute." The study methodology and the details are as follows:
First, this study classified and analyzed the stage design and stage costume design of the existing Magic Flute by concept, and then, examined their features, respectively.
Second, this study investigated the script of the English musical, the Magic Flute, and analyzed personality and features of each character.
Third, this study unfolded the stage costume concept, based on the analyses of existing performance''s stage costume and the characters'' personality and features described in the current study subject''s script.
Fourth, this study made each character''s stage costume and presented the pattern drafting method, cutting and sewing method.

The findings of this study are presented below:
Firstly, among the Magic Flute performances conducted thus far, this study analyzed the stage designs and stage costume designs of 10 foreign performance works, of which videos were available. Concepts were classified into factual, modern, fantastic, graphical and historic concepts. The factual concept was reproduced by reflecting original work''s temporal background and characters. The modern concept consisted of modern facilities or costumes from the current point in time. For the fantastic concept, fantastic atmosphere was created with various performances and huge sculptures and costume with exaggerated silhouette. The graphical concept consisted of vivid colors and simplified shapes without special decoration. The historical concept was composed of scrupulous stage and costume that reminded people of a ceratin era or place.
Secondly, overall stage costume design concept was defined as follows on the basis of the analyses on the existing performance stage costume and the characters'' personality and features of this study subject''s script. The characters appearing in the children''s English media musical, "the Magic Flute" are Tamino, Pamina, Papageno, maids, boys, bird''s fairies and chorus, which can be called 7 types of characters. This work is the performance containing the properties of musical, music, English, dance and science. Because, any stage sets were never used, and images replaced all stage designs, costume silhouette was to be seen well and plenty of white color was used. The images of the boys and chorus receiving lighting were designed by adopting graphical factor''s simplicity. Since this work targets elementary school students, the costumes for Tamino, Pamina and maids were designed by adopting historic factors. The costumes of Papageno and bird''s fairies were portrayed through fantastic atmosphere using funny and exaggerated expressions in order to complement drawbacks of the unclear stage design in terms of point in time application.
The design concept of each character is as follows:
As Tamino is a brave, promising Egyptian prince, a strong image was depicted using red color. Pamina is the daughter of the queen of the night and she is an honest person. Lace fabric was used instead of using less fancy details so that her mental attitude can be expressed well. Papageno is a timid and fastuous person. Sculpture details emphasizing movement to show exaggerated behaviors were used. The maids are those who obey the queen of the night, and thus, dark image was portrayed using black color from head to toe. Boys are good and true persons, and thus, bright image was depicted using white color overall. Bird''s fairies actively appear, and crisp colors were used for their introduction so as to associate with bird''s breed. Since chorus plays a role of acclaiming Sarastro, huge and simple details were used to portray triumphal procession.
Thirdly, it was the most important to make stage costume so that many people can wear in the children''s English media musical, the Magic Flute.

This study also measured sizes and then confirmed them. The sizes of 211 elementary school students, 5 English musical instructors and 5 professional adult actors/actresses were measured. Tamino, Pamina, maids, boys and chorus''s costumes were made by classifying them into two sizes, S (small) and L (large).

As for composition characteristics, unitard and leotard were actively used. Many people shared unitard and leotard, thanks to their flexibility. Size was made free by putting a control device into the costume. Size was able to be adjusted even in one costume by putting a band in the waist or using a cord. Through flat composition, costumes were simplified and made not retrained by various sizes. Also, by simplifying sewing process, many costumes could be completed within short time.

A total of 69 costumes for stage costume were made for 7 types of characters, and the design, job directions, materials, patterns, cutting and sewing methods were presented. This study is considered to have huge significance in that not only the stage costume was developed for the Magic Flute, but the presented processes ranging from design to production in detail can be used for educational content.
