In this study, we investigated the adsorption-breakthrough characteristics of 10 target biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) ((1) isoprene, (2) (+)-α-pinene, (3) camphene, (4) (+)-β-pinene, (5) (+)-3-carene, (6) α-phellandrene, (7) α-terpinene, (8) (R)-(+)-limonene, (9) γ-terpinene, and (10) p-cymene) and two reference anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) (11) benzene, and (12) toluene. The analysis of their liquid-phase working standard was carried out with the aid of sorbent tube/thermal desorber-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (ST/TD-GC/MS). To this end, two types of sorbent tubes (ST) were tested and compared: single bed (Carbopack C) and 3-bed (Carbopack C, Carbopack B, and Carbopack X). The response factor (RF) value of the 10 BVOCs were evaluated as a function of purge volume and temperature.
Although most BVOCs had near 100 % recovery on a 3-bed CBX ST at 60 °C: isoprene, (+)-α-pinene, and (+)-β-pinene had recoveries of 7.17, 68.5, and 35.3 %, respectively, at 60 °C. BT volume generally increased with retention time (RT) and decrease with temperature. In contrast, for the 1-bed C ST, isoprene was not detected and five BVOCs ((+)-α-pinene, camphene, α-terpinene, (R)-(+)-limonene, and γ-terpinene) experienced breakthrough with increasing purge volumes and temperature. Accordingly, the estimated 5 and 50 % BTV values were BTV5% (9 (camphene) ? 570 (α-terpinene) L/g) and BTV50% (130 (camphene) ? 570 ((+)-α-pinene) L/g). To assess the BVOC sorptive losses in a bag sampling method, their recoveries were ascertained from polyester aluminum bags (PEA bag) as a function of storage time (up to 5 days). Their relative recovery of the BVOCs normalized to the storage time of 0 d (0 h) varied from 90.2 ± 6.12 % (24 h) to 67.8 ± 15.4 % (5 d).
