The goal of the present thesis is to objectify the intrinsic subjectivity of sound as a media of music by employing psycho-acoustical research methodology to analyze a musical work. To achieve this goal, sound quality index is developed to objectify emotional response of audience and then sound used by composers is objectified by combining these index with musical elements. First, 18 sound samples are selected from 「Symponie Fantastique」written by the French composer Hector Berlioz in 1830, which is a piece of program music that tells the story of "an artist gifted with a lively imagination." Then, the objective Zwicher’s sound quality parameters such as: Loudness, Sharpness, Roughness and Fluctuation Strength are evaluated for each of these sound samples. Finally, the jury test using the same sound samples are performed for 10 participants. On a basis of the computed sound metrics and jury test result, three sound quality indexes are developed to represent the sound qualities of 「Symponie Fantastique」in terms of “brightness”, “noisiness” and “reality.” It is expected that the developed sound quality indexes improve understanding of possible uncertainty due to intrinsic subjectivity of sound which may occur in communication process by music between composers and audience.
