The thickness of the facial bone wall in the anterior maxilla is one of important factors for implant treatment with better esthetics and prognosis. The term of gingival biotype is more correct to describe features of the periodontium. The primary objects of this study was to evaluate the thickness of labial plate of anterior maxillary teeth and the gingival biotype in Koreans. The secondary object was to evaluate whether there is a positive correlation between the gingival biotype and the thickness of labial plate. This study was performed on 335 teeth from 57 subjects. CBCT was used to measure the thickness of labial plate in a faciopalatal direction at 4mm, 6mm, 8mm from cementoenamel junction and the gingival biotype was examined by periodontal probe visibility through the marginal gingiva. Within the limits of this study, the majority of examined teeth exhibited a thin facial bone (<1mm; 87% at 4mm, 88% at 6mm, 90% at 8mm) and thin gingival biotype (21%). Gingival biotype is not significantly related to the thickness of labial plate. Therefore, an thorough examination of alveolar ridge including buccal plate and the characteristics of gingival tissue is mandatory for clinician to perform the implant treatment.
