The Demands of consumers who live the contemporary society are changing every second. Prompt react to various desires from customers, adjusting such changes, is the matter of importance to the modern fashion industry. DTP (Digital Textile Printing) with the development of textile printers was introduced to the textile industry trying to meet these social changes in the early 1990‘s. DTP, with digitalizing conventional textile printing processes, simplified the conventional method of printing on textile and shortened the process time radically. A wide variety and small quantity system became feasible with DTP and the industry was able to react much faster to ever changing customer demands. In spite of these advantage, the application and the use of DTP are not yet popular in comparison to developed countries.
The purposes of this research are to develop new fashion design products in Scandinavian style using DTP, to contribute in utilization and popularization of DTP, and to propose fashion product design that reflects the recent trend to satisfy consumers'' sensibility. The methods of this research are domestic and international literatures, report materials regarding DTP and Scandinavian design as theoretical backgrounds, the concepts and features of DTP, and expression and characteristics of Scandinavian design by searching through internet contents. 535 articles from IKEA and Marimekko representing Scandinavian design and brands were collected and analyzed and then image motives were derived from them. 9 textile patterns were developed through decision making of concept and restructuring of design in reference to these materials. Efforts have been made for the optimum color printing by executing monitor calibration with EYE-ONE DISPLAY PRO from X-Rite Company to enhance color reproduction of the outcome of the developed textile design prior to printing process. With the use of the textile pattern derived from the procedure, total of 12 items reflecting Scandinavian style design were proposed: one jacket, two articles of tops, two articles of skirts, one pair of pants, one one-piece dress, one apron, one kitchen mitt, one tissue cover, and one cushion. Based on this research activities, the conclusions drawn from this studies in Scandinavian style fashion design product with application of DTP are as follows.
First, it can be confirmed that Digital Textile Printing reduced the complicated processes by digitalizing the whole processes from design to textile printing, enables the wide variety and small quantity production feasible, and reacts promptly to personalized customer demands.
Second, Scandinavian design are comprised of neat and simple images with practical functionality un-exaggerated with motives inspired by surroundings of daily lives and nature, and the image motives from nature constitutes the greatest portion from all.
Motives from natural images are based mainly on plants and images of flowers are mostly found among them. From the result of analyzing flower motives, it has been found that large size in flowers, abstract in figures, and primary colors in colors constitute major portion in fashion and interior products. In composition, flowers only in fashion and flowers mixed with other elements in interior products comprise the most.
Third, Scandinavian design is not only an ever-changing fashion design but also practical design combining past, present and future with continuous development in design, not as trend conscious as other fields in design with the possibility of continuous development of design.
Efforts were made for more systematic and practical usage in regards to Digital Textile Printing and its generalization. DTP is an area where it still has a few technical difficulties to be resolved such as limitation in selection of textile due to inks, color fastness to washing, and primary color reproduction in digital printing. However, utilizing design manpower produced in various areas with domestic Information Technology, DTP may be able to turn the Textile industry regarded as a declining industry into a high value added industry. Therefore, based on this research, the follow-up research will be focused on commercialization of Nano-ink, continuous development in color reproduction technology in digital printing and product enhancement need to be realized. It is also anticipated that uniquely designed Korean patterns and styles to be developed and recognized internationally as well as domestically as Scandinavian design is known for one of the distinctive characteristic designs.
