PU Foam, which is used in LNG carrier as an insulation and cushioning material is composed of polyol and isocyanate. The material behavior must be known in order to design a LNG carrier without any damage under sloshing conditions. Since the sloshing causes a very strong impulse loading condition on the LNG carrier, the high strain rate behavior and local damage of the foam material must be verified.
The purpose of this study is to verify the high strain rate behavior of PU foam material and also investigate the local damage of the material. Three sizes of specimens, 25mm, 50mm, 100mm, were compared under dynamic loading conditions. The strain rate obtained in the compression tests were 0.001/s - 100/s. In order to investigate the local strain distribution, several strain measuring techniques were compared such as a grid method and a digital image correlation(DIC) method. High strain rate behavior under cryogenic condition was also investigated.
Several patterns were compared to measure strains with DIC under impact compression loading conditions and a stable pattern making condition was found. The PU foam showed a high strain rate hardening effect and inhomogeneous strain distribution. The modified stress-strain curve considering the local strain distribution can be obtained from the tests and strain analyzation methods.
