The universal bonding agent contains silane and MDP since it has the ability for bonding to the tooth surface and indirect supplement like, ceramic, resin and metal. Bonding of indirect resin composite depends on mechanical retention and residual free carbon bonds for chemical adhesion. Silanes are applied as additional chemical for surface treatment of indirect resin composite to bond the filler matrix strongly to the composite. This study will analysis the effectiveness of silane included universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) of bond strength between indirect resin composite and resin cement. The prepared specimens (n=90) randomly received one of the following three silanization and bonding procedures: 1) No silane pretreatment and Single Bond Universal; 2) RelyX Ceramic Primer (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) and Single Bond Universal; 3) Bis-Silane (BISCO Inc, Schaumburg, IL, USA) and Single Bond Universal. There are no significant difference of early bond strength value between Single Bond Universal group and silane pretreatment group. However, after thermocycling period, the bond strength of Single Bond Universal group had significantly discrepancy. Bis-GMA in Single Bond Universal could inhibit the chemical reaction between silane in Single Bond Universal. FT-IR spectra showed that RelyX Ceramic Primer and Bis-Silane have similar pattern of siloxane bond after application to resin composite surface. Although the limitation of this study, we could conclude that silane pretreatment before application of multipurpose universal adhesive improve bond durability between indirect resin composite and resin cement. We recommend that silane should always be treated to indirect resin composite surface prior to bonding agent.
