Diesel engine has been developed to improve performance and reduce exhaust emissions gas because our environment is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions from automobiles. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong. Therefore, exhaust emission gas regulation has been enhanced for every year.
So, lots of researchers have studied to reduce these exhaust emissions and have been attracted to develop various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels.
Biodiesel fuel is a alternative fuel that is manufactured from vegetable oils, recycled cooking greases or animal fats. Biodiesel fuel is a also useable fuel due to the high cetane number and heating value, but physical and chemical properties of biodiesel fuel are different from diesel fuel such as compressibility, viscosity. When biodiesel fuel is used in a diesel engine, the performance, exhaust emissions can differ from diesel fuel for different fuel properties.
In this study, engine performance, exhaust emission and hydrocarbon emission characteristics was investigated using lard biodiesel with CRDI(common rail direct injection) diesel engine. To analysis the individual hydrocarbon emission for C1∼C8, we used the gas chromatography and compared with the case of turbocharger and intercooler equipment to engine. And, it was tried to analyze the quantities of the low and high boiling point hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon by the gas chromatography.
As results of this study show that the individual hydrocarbon(C1~C8) for the exhaust emissions with biodiesel fuel are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel under the high load and engine speed.
This study shows that the method which established at gas chromatography analyzed various exhaust emissions through quantitative analysis, too. Especially, results of this study show the fact that the cases of biodiesel fuels than that of the diesel fuel achieved distinguished reduction of smoke because both higher and lower hydrocarbon were reduced at the chromatogram.
In case that the turbocharger and intercooler applied the engine, as biodiesel fuels which includes the oxygen component was promoting combustion process, smoke was reduced respectively, but BSEC and NOx were increased slightly on the whole range.
In addition, results of this study established effects of biodesel fuel for the various exhaust emissions and proved potentiality as for additives in diesel engine.
